Settling In at Kendal Nursery School
Making sure your child is happy and secure is our top priority. We know that children learn best when they feel confident and cared for, so the time we spend settling them into Nursery is time well invested. Every child is different – some settle quickly while others may need more time – and we will work closely with you to make the transition as smooth as possible.
The Key Worker
Once you have confirmed your place, your child will be allocated a Key Worker. This person has a special role in getting to know your child and supporting them throughout their time with us.
The Key Worker:
-
Builds a close and trusting relationship with your child and family.
-
Helps your child to feel safe, valued and understood.
-
Observes and supports your child’s development and learning.
-
Is your main point of contact, sharing regular updates, discussing progress, and listening to any concerns.
Your child’s Key Worker also coordinates their online learning journal on Tapestry, capturing the wonderful activities, progress and moments of curiosity that happen each week. You are always welcome to talk to your child’s Key Worker at drop off, pick up, or by arranging a chat at a time that suits you.
Stay and Play
To begin the induction process, you and your child will be invited to a Stay and Play session. This is a relaxed opportunity to meet staff, explore the classroom together, and begin building a bond with your child’s Key Worker.
Home Visit
We also value the opportunity to visit you and your child in your home. This allows us to get to know your child in a familiar environment and to hear from you – the people who know them best – about their interests, routines and needs. Families often tell us that children talk about and remember their home visit long after it happens, which shows just how important and reassuring it is.
Starting Nursery
Every child’s start will look a little different. Some children are eager to join in straight away; others may need a little more time, and may be upset at first. We fully understand and will work with you to make the process gentle and positive.
If your child is unsettled, you are very welcome to stay as long as you and the staff feel is helpful. Once your child is comfortable, we find a short, clear “goodbye” usually works best, with a reminder that you will be back soon. If you feel unsure after leaving, you are always welcome to call us to see how your child is getting on – or even stay for a cup of tea until you’re ready.
At Kendal Nursery School, we want every child – and every parent – to feel safe, supported and confident from the very first day.
